第二十七章 論聖禮

  一、聖禮是恩典之約的聖潔標記與印證1,由神直接所設立2,為要表徵基督和他的恩惠,並堅持我們在他裡面的關切3;又在屬教會的人與世界其餘的人之間設立一可見的區分4;並且按照神的話,在基督里嚴肅地服事神5。


  二、在每一聖禮中,在標記與表徵之間都有一種屬靈的關係,或言聖禮上的聯合;因此一聖禮的名稱與功效可歸其他聖禮使用6。


  三、在正當執行的聖禮中所表示的恩典,並非由於聖禮的本身所給與的任何效力,亦非在乎執行聖禮者的虔誠或存心7,乃在乎聖靈的工作8,和設立聖禮的話語,在此話語中含有吩咐人使用聖禮的命令,又給那配領受聖禮者得福益的應許9。


  四、我們的主基督在福音中只設立了兩個聖禮,即洗禮和主餐;二者除正式受封立的牧師執行外,任何人不得執行10。


  五、舊約的聖禮關於屬靈之事所表徵的,與新約的聖禮在本質上相同11。

第二十七章 論聖禮

一.聖禮是恩典之約的聖潔標記和印證(羅4:11;創17:7,10),由上帝親自設立(太28:19;林前11:23),代表基督及其恩惠,並證實我們與祂有分(林前10:16;11:25-26;加3:17);聖禮也將屬教會的人與世上其他的人明顯劃分(羅15:8;出12:48;創34:14),並嚴肅地要求他們在基督里照着上帝的聖言服事祂(羅6:3-4;林前10:16,21)。


二.在每一聖禮中,在標記和其所表徵者之間,都有一種屬靈的關係,或聖 禮上的聯合;因此,二者名稱和功效可以彼此相歸(創17:10;太26:27-28;多3:5)。


三. 在施行得宜的聖禮中,藉此聖禮所展示的恩典,並不是由聖禮本身的什麼權能賦與的;聖禮的功效也不依賴施行者的虔誠或心意(羅2:28-29;彼前 3:21),而是依賴聖靈的運行(太3:11;林前 12:13)和設立聖禮的道,因為這道不僅吩咐人舉行聖 禮,而且應許賜恩惠給配領受的人(太26:27,28;28:19-20)。


四. 我們的主基督在福音中所設立的聖禮只有兩個,即洗禮和聖餐:它們除由合乎聖經按立的牧師施行以外,任何人不得施行(太28:19;林前 11:20,23;4:1;來5:4)。


五.舊約的聖禮對屬靈之事所表徵的,在實質上是與新約的聖禮所表徵的相 同(林前10:1-4)。

CHAPTER 27 OF THE SACRAMENTS

1. Sacraments are holy signs and seals of the covenant of grace, immediately instituted by God, to represent Christ, and his benefits; and to confirm our interest in him: as also, to put a visible difference between those that belong unto the church, and the rest of the world; and solemnly to engage them to the service of God in Christ, according to his Word.

2. There is, in every sacrament, a spiritual relation, or sacramental union, between the sign and the thing signified: whence it comes to pass, that the names and effects of the one are attributed to the other.

3. The grace which is exhibited in or by the sacraments rightly used, is not conferred by any power in them; neither doth the efficacy of a sacrament depend upon the piety or intention of him that doth administer it: but upon the work of the Spirit, and the word of institution, which contains, together with a precept authorizing the use thereof, a promise of benefit to worthy receivers.

4. There be only two sacraments ordained by Christ our Lord in the Gospel; that is to say, baptism, and the Supper of the Lord: neither of which may be dispensed by any, but by a minister of the Word lawfully ordained.

5. The sacraments of the old testament, in regard of the spiritual things thereby signified and exhibited, were, for substance, the same with those of the new.

Of the Sacraments

I. Sacraments are holy signs and seals of the covenant of grace,[1] immediately instituted by God,[2] to represent Christ and His benefits; and to confirm our interest in Him:[3] as also, to put a visible difference between those that belong unto the Church and the rest of the world;[4] and solemnly to engage them to the service of God in Christ, according to His Word.[5]

II. There is, in every sacrament, a spiritual relation, or sacramental union, between the sign and the thing signified: whence it comes to pass, that the names and effects of the one are attributed to the other.[6]

III. The grace which is exhibited in or by the sacraments rightly used, is not conferred by any power in them; neither does the efficacy of a sacrament depend upon the piety or intention of him that does administer it:[7] but upon the work of the Spirit,[8] and the word of institution, which contains, together with a precept authorizing the use thereof, a promise of benefit to worthy receivers.[9]

IV. There are only two sacraments ordained by Christ our Lord in the Gospel; that is to say, Baptism, and the Supper of the Lord: neither of which may be dispensed by any, but by a minister of the Word lawfully ordained.[10]

V. The sacraments of the Old Testament in regard to the spiritual things thereby signified and exhibited, were, for substance, the same with those of the new.[11]

8 太三11我是用水給你們施洗,叫你們悔改;但那在我以後來的,能力比我更大,我就是給他提鞋也不配。他要用聖靈與火給你們施洗。林前十二13 我們不拘是猶太人,是希臘人,是為奴的,是自主的,都從一位聖靈受洗,成了一個身體,飲於一位聖靈。

11 林前十1弟兄們,我不願意你們不曉得,我們的祖宗從前都在雲下,都從海中經過, 2都在雲里、海里受洗歸了摩西, 3並且都吃了一樣的靈食, 4也都喝了一樣的靈水;所喝的,是出於隨著他們的靈磐石,那磐石就是基督。五7你們既是無酵的面,應當把舊酵除淨,好使你們成為新團;因為我們逾越節的羔羊基督,已經被殺獻祭了。 8所以我們守這節不可用舊酵,也不可用惡毒(註:或作「陰毒」)、邪惡的酵,只用誠實真正的無酵餅。。

GAL 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

[4] ROM 15:8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers. EXO 12:48 And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. GEN 34:14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us.

[5] ROM 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 1CO 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

[6] GEN 17:10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. MAT 26:27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. TIT 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

[7] ROM 2:28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: 29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. 1PE 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us(not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

[8] MAT 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire. 1CO 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

[9] MAT 26:27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
